Point Reyes, California

Surrounded by coastline, rolling hills and small seaside towns, Point Reyes is a hidden gem of California. As you drive through, you pass old milk dairies that are still in operation and oyster shacks that you know have the most fresh oysters on the west coast just waiting for you with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. Located just North of San Francisco, yet the 100 square miles of preserved coast makes one feel like city life is in a distant off land. Inducted into to the National Park System in 1962, Point Reyes National Seashore is still the only federally protected seashore on the west coast of the United States.

After celebrating New Year’s Eve in San Fransisco with some of my best lady friends, we packed the car and headed up the coast for a weekend of unplugging in Point Reyes. And thus spent our time (sans tech distractions) by trying the local foods (mainly cheeses), hiking to completely empty beaches and exploring the string of old little towns along Tomales Bay. On our way through Point Reyes Station, one of the main towns, we made a few pit stops for dinner supplies: Cowgirl Creamery for locally made cheeses, Bovine Bakery for fresh bread, and the local market for of course a bottle of Napa Valley wine. Living in France on and off over the last year has definitly trained me in the habit eating just bread, wine and cheese for dinner… and sometimes maybe breakfast and lunch too.

Olivia found us a tiny, pond-side, cabin through Airbnb on an organic yarn farm in Nicasio. Black Mountain Farm, not only had sheep but also chickens, Angora rabbits, a horse, and two dogs, one of which was a Golden Retriever puppy named Poppy whose cuteness could have kept us at the farm to spin wool and play with her forever. The owner of the farm, Marnie, leads indigo dyeing workshops, makes her own natural shampoos + conditioners, and is working on creating a natural toothpaste. The cabin had no wifi, nor cell service, no lighting, no heat, and no running water. However on the deck behind the cabin, sat a bathtub which had been rigged to a garden hose, a gas tank and a water heater. I took an outdoor shower in the tub while it was raining and I must say it was quite lovely being warm amidst the rain while looking out at the view of the lake beyond.

Meet Lola

My kitchen is a space where one will always find fresh breadcrumbs, a sign of a life shared and enjoyed. A bouquet of flowers on the counter each week reminds me of the delicacy and vitality of life, it reminds me to live fully not just in check lists as we can so easily do…
